2008 Myer Bendigo Classics Road Series Race 7:  Sunday 3 August Mark Symons Memorial Huntly – Rochester Classic

Shepparton rouleur Trent Stevenson won the Huntly – Rochester Mark Symons Memorial Handicap from the mark of honour in testing conditions on Sunday.  Shepparton Riders dominated the race with evergreen Leigh Egan and Brendan Shultz rounding out the podium.

The race was initially delayed due to fog and once that cleared the rain set in making racing more than pleasant for competitors.  The scratch bunch worked hard to chase down the three riders in front and took control on the race.

Simon Bennett and Terry Schintler both collected valuable Myer Series points in the penultimate race.  Both riders remain in contention for a series victory with a win in Pyramid Hill.

Stoltz Claims Victory on Historic Day for Australian Cycling

Jo Stoltz won Saturday afternoons 53km road race in emphatic style.  On a day when the sporting eyes of Australia turned to cycling Stoltz delivered the result the fans were looking for.

The three minute bunch containing Tony Jones, Justin Mollison, Cameron Cecil and Jo Stoltz were the form bunch reeling in the front bunches by the final ascent of the Telephone Exchange.  In the final kilometres to the line attacks came thick and fast with Nic McInery and Cait Fraser both active.  Stoltz went solo with 2 km to go and was shortly after caught and passed Mollison who had also fled the chasing group.  Mollison built his lead to 100m before Stoltz slowly dragged him back and then showed a clean pair of heals in the dash for the line.

Dave Pell profited from the shenanigans up front to win the fastest time by 39 seconds.

The SS’s Classic 53km

Mud Sweat and Tears in the Hell of the Harcourt North

Sam Conder emerged victorious in Race 6 of the Myer Classics Series; The SS’s ClassicOn a day where only hardmen need apply Conder drove his fellow limit markers through the wind, rain and muddy dirt roads of Harcourt North.  The limit markers made the made of the most a generous handicap and never looked rivalled.  The dirt section on the Sutton Grange – Harcourt Road and 12% gradients of the North Gap Road made it difficult for the all groups to remain congruous.  Club Champion Shaun McCarthy won the scratch markers sprint for fastest time on David Rebelin’s loaned bike.

With only two races left in the Myer Classics Series a win and top ten result could see half a dozen riders dislodge Finning from the series crown.  13 points are awarded to the winner and then 11, 10, 9 – 3 for top ten.

As the Going Got Tough the Tough Got Going

Teenage cycling sensation Micah Leske won Saturday’s road race in cold and windy conditions.  Leske outsprinted Jordan Lucas and Todd Derrick after the three escaped their group on the Gooseneck on first lap and worked well together to stay away on a day that couldn’t even raise the temperature to double digits.

2008 Myer Bendigo Classics Road Series Race 5: The 60km Decked Out Coaching Emu Creek – Mt Alexander Classic

Sozzi First to the Top as Finning Tightens Grip on Myer Series.

Jordan Sozzi has won the fifth race in the 2008 Myer Bendigo Classics Series.  He danced on the pedals all the way to the top of summit in the cold to take home the Decked Out Coaching Emu Creek – Mt Alexander Classic.  Pip Grinter followed him home to take out the fastest time ribbon for the second week in a row and Finning was third to put himself in an almost unbeatable position in the 2008 Myer Bendigo Series.

All the groups were away fast with scratch the most disciplined.  At the Sutton Grange hall the front markers were looking good but the large middle marker bunch caught them on the rollers towards the base of the climb.  Behind them scratch had caught the two bunches in front and kept the foot down.

As the road headed skyward Sozzi, an Echuca 2nd year U17, found his legs to survive against the in-form (but certainly not informidable) Pip Grinter.

2008 Myer Bendigo Classics Road Series Race 4: The Myer Bendigo Inglewood Classic 60km

Grinter Solos to Victory while Finning builds series lead.

Pip Grinter has won Sundays Race 4 in the 2008 Myer Bendigo Classics Road Series; the 60km Myer Bendigo Inglewood Classic, in fine form by attacking the wind blown selection in the final kilometres and staying away to take his first classics win solo.  Sean Finning finished second collecting valuable points to leap ahead of Terry Schintler and Simon Bennett in the Myer Series tally.

The scratch bunch, loaded with the horsepower of Finning, Grinter, Jamie Crass and Tony Fitzpatrick, went out hard and were rewarded for their early efforts by catching the chopping block bunch after only 20km.  The two bunches together teamed well into the head wind along the Bridgewater Serpentine Road and had the front of the race in sight before the turn onto the Wedderburn Serpentine Road with 22km to go.

On the Wedderburn Serpentine Road the cross wind was lethal.  Finning and Grinter upped the power as the combined scratch bunch caught the remaining bunches and snaked past on the narrow road.  The wind left only the contenders at the front of the race.  By the time the front bunch turned left towards Inglewood with 12km to go only five remained; Finning, Grinter, Crass, Mark Flood and Joel Fahy.

Fahy was first to test his legs on the climb through the Inglewood Flora Reserve.  He opened up a gap quickly but just as quickly Grinter countered and landed his killer punch with the others left wanting.  Grinter went full throttle over the top of the four kilometre climb and held onto a 24 second advantage when he crossed the line.  Finning showed Flood, Fahy and Crass why he’s a Commonwealth Gold Medallist in the sprint for second.

2008 Myer Bendigo Classics Road Series Race 3: Chalmers Butchers Marong to Wedderburn Classic 75km

Schintler In Charge and On Top

Terry Schintler won this Sunday’s Race 3 in the 2008 Myer Bendigo Classics Road Series, the Chalmers Butchers Marong to Wedderburn 75km Classic and in doing so also took the lead in the series by a single point.

Schintler’s 13-minute bunch made the most of the beautiful racing conditions that greeted the 65 riders in the classic on the first day of winter.  They worked even turns and caught the 16 minute bunch containing power houses Dave Mannix and Micah Leske by Llanelly.  Together the two bunches continued mowing down the out-markers whilst keeping their numbers over the undulating course past Melville Caves and toward Wedderburn.

Once on the Logan-Wedderburn Road the 13-minute combined bunch hit the front of the race with the backmarkers nowhere to be seen.  The race turned left onto High St in Wedderburn with 600m to travel and in an awesome display of power Schintler beat home riders with very impressive resumes and saluted the Wedderburn crowd.

At the rear of the race the Scratch bunch suffered early casualties but still collared the chopping block and 4 minute bunch after Llanelly with almost 50km still to race.  The large fast bunch struggled to maintain momentum and finished over 2 minutes behind Schintler with Dave Pell taking out fastest time honours from Trent Stevenson.

Schintler now leads the 2008 Myer Bendigo Classics Road Series from Simon Bennett by a point.  Both riders have featured in the finale of the last two races and have a small buffer from Carly McCoombe who didn’t race this weekend.

Finning Repeats the Double

On the Telephone Exchange Hill on Emu Creek Road Finning, Mark O’Brien and Shaun McCarthy broke clear and were unchallenged.  In the finale Finning packed the biggest punch and was followed home by O’Brien and McCarthy.

2008 Myer Bendigo Classics Road Series Race 2: The Bill Spencer Memorial Marong to Melville Caves 67km

Finning Strongest of the Strongmen

Castlemaine’s Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Sean Finning won Sunday’s Myer Bendigo Classics Road Series Race 2; the 67km Bill Spencer Memorial Marong to Melville Caves in an exciting finish on the slopes of the Melville Caves.  Finning left his lunge for the line to very last moment to beat Bendigo’s Sean McCarthy and Tony Fitzpatrick who had attacked the pair and looked to have had the classic wrapped up.

57 local and visiting hardmen (and women) greeted the starters gun for the 67km journey from Marong through Newbridge, Llanelly, Rheola finishing on the brutal climb of the Melville Caves.  And it was the scratchmen who controlled the race from the back. Finning, McCarthy, Fitzpatrick, Mark Flood and Luke Knox wasted no time in ramping up the speed and had collared the 3 minute bunch at Newbridge and the 5 minute bunch by Llanelly still with plenty of bitumen in front of them.  The three bunches formed a massive super group and were motoring.

Finning and McCarthy were pushing the pace and on the Bendigo – St Arnaud Road near Moliagul finally broke the bunch as yet another middle markers bunch had been reeled in.  Pandemonium resulted with a small bunch of six containing Finning, McCarthy, Fitzpatrick, Travis Storer and Todd and Terry Schintler began to hunt the limit markers in the final 20km.

The chase bunch finally bridged the gap at the base of the 1.8km climb to the car park finish and Tony Fitzpatrick attacked immediately.  He opened up a sizeable gap and looked to have the race won.  But McCarthy dug deep and crossed the gap with only metres to spare and with him bought Finning who won the sprint and took out the race.

Eileen Spencer and her family presented the winners with prizes at the BBQ following.

Carly McCoombe retains her early lead in the 2008 Myer Bendigo Classics Road Series by a single point from Finning.
