The race started in mild conditions with a fresh South Easterley breeze. It was only a question of how soon scratch would close it down .That is, until Elphinstone. As the bunches cleared the 3 tier hill they hit the wind which soon freshened wonderfully for a lovely ride home.
The gap from limit to scratch, after Metcalfe, stopped closing & a real contest developed. With scratch not under 60 km/h through the Eppalock hills the gap was under 2 min at the red brick church, with a headwind. 5 k’s to go the race was over with just over 20 survivors hitting the line in the sprint finish. With the benefit of youth, Peter Johnstone managed to gain a couple of lengths to beat the more fancied scratchies.
