Conditions were just perfect to race. No wind, sunshine & mid teens. The high speeds killed off 2 scratchies by Dunolly .But they were down to 9 minutes behind limit.By Laanecoorie the gap was 6 minutes limit to scratch & closing fast. On the turn , however, everyone thought they were scratch; bunches had to fight for the smallest of gaps. An 18 k sprint ensued with most bunches still apart at the end. Eric showed a big improvement since his last race to prove triathletes can sprint.
Marshals were John Lucas, Kerry Benjamin, Brett Fisher, Cam Dean, Petar Benjamin, Trevor McDougall & Gary Pontelandolfo.
Marshals for Melville Caves on 1st May are Steve Flood, Brendan Sait, Nicole McNamara & Daniel Jackson.

3rd           Tony Fitzpatrick                   ( Kel Jones relegated from 2nd; Tim Hucker from 4th )

1st lap a  leisurely 45 minutes to have a look around. The 2nd lap of 38 minutes reflected serious attacks from Ash, Steve & Dave Mannix. They were caught , after getting a minute, at the start of the 3rd. Another 38 minute lap followed, with Pelly sneaking up the road. At Sedgwick he had 30 seconds, the Gooseneck 50 seconds. Then he got serious, winning by 2 minutes. The 11 remaining riders did their best in the chase, but the gap was too big. The big sprint finish saw 2 relegations for technical infringements.

Cait shot off on the Gooseneck to kill the race 1st time around. The speed remained high throughout, the finish time only about 4 minutes off the men’s time; the men’s bunch had a lot more riders to drive them on.

Marshals were Bill Fleming, Petar Benjamin, Cam Dean, Chris Lightfoot, Maurie Kenned,y Gary Pontelandolfo & John Lucas.

With a big field for a hard hit out before the championships, the weather & roads combined for a fast race. The outer bunches were on a mission, all coming together 10k’s from home. Unfortunately, at 1:15 race time, contact was made in the pack & 4 came down. The lead of almost 5 minutes evaporated, with some stopping to help & the rest losing their drive. Scratch/2nd scratch powered through with a couple of k’s to go & the sprint began on Woodstock Heights , a whole k out. Lappers lead out & looked great for the 1st 700 metres. Schultzy & Shaun then came off the wheel for the salute.
*** Finish time not exact; just over 1:35.
Marshals were Gary Pontelandolfo, Terry Crome, Jamie Crass, Petar Benjamin, Syd Anstee, Ben Knight, Kevin O’Dea & John Lucas.

1st          Ben Knight
2nd        Steve Mccallum
3rd         Nicole McNamara
              Mark Buckell
Most stayed in the bunch until almost the end, with Ben holding out Stevie by the barest of margins.

B GRADE              30 minutes & 3 laps         17 riders

Noel Sens, Greg Mundy, James Thompson, Jarrod Hartley, Justin Leske, Dave Heath, Rob Oakenfull, Sean Penno, Steve Rooney, Dave Mannix, Adam Lennon, Syd Anstee,         Kate Finegan, Ash Harding, Dion Jelbart, Andrew Creek, Toni Abbisogni

1st           Ash Harding
2nd          Rob Oakenfull
3rd           Steve Rooney
                Justin Leske
                Jarrod Hartley
The predictable break by Robbie was eagerly awaited by Ash , the two keeping the gap up to try to stay away. Only Steve saw a chance of bridging the gap, with a lone chase almost paying off on the line. Robbie went for home; Ash bolted on the left; Steve kept going & just missed out .

A GRADE              40 minutes & 3 laps         12 riders

Mark Flood, Andrew Pascoe, Tony Fitzpatrick, Tim Ralton, Brad McCallum, Jack Haig, Justin Mollison, Todd Schintler, Sam Crome, Robbie Hucker, Clinton Slotegraaf, Luke Knox

1st           Tony Fitzpatrick
2nd          Mark Flood
3rd           Luke Knox
The pace was on early with no breaks surviving for very long. A lap out & Floody came off Ralts’s wheel heading for home. With Jack chasing the field was spread, seemingly too far, for anyone else to have a chance. But Fitzy had the Superman suit on & ran them down, towing Luke home with him.
The marshals were Carol Anderson, Gary Pontelandolfo, Adam Lennon, Mark Flood, Petar Benjamin, Brenton Slotegraaf, Jamie Crass, Rob Crass, Donna McCallum,    Steve McCallum, Terry Schintler & lots of help from the parents of the juniors.

1st           Steve McCallum
2nd          Jess Berry
3rd           Tess Spencer-Gill

High but even pace from the start, with everything happening on the last lap. Steve had to dig deep for the win, Jess & Tess battled through for the minors.

B GRADE              19 RIDERS            30 MINUTES & 3 LAPS

Andrew Creek, Greg Mundy, Robert Oakenful, Dave Mannix, James Thompson, Jordan Lucas,     Justin Leske, Adam Lennon, Syd Anstee, Ash Harding, Steve Rooney, Jarrod Hartley, Jason Searle, Todd Schintler, Mark Henriksen, Ty Chaffey-Jones, Terry Schintler, Brad McCallum, Ewan Hauler

2nd          Robert Oakenful
3rd           Ash Harding
                Justin Leske
                Syd Anstee
                Todd Schintler

Robert away early, the bunch giving him 10 seconds of string. Just when he’d had enough, Ash & Brad went over to make a race of it. The bunch was caught in a fit of manners (“ you go first” “ no, you” “no, you” ) & the chase began way too late. Brad had to out-do dad & took the money.

A GRADE              12 RIDERS            45 MINUTES & 3 LAPS

Sam Crome, Brendan Schultz, Kel Jones, Luke Knox, Andrew Pascoe, Darren Lapthorne, Peter Ladd, Tim Ralton,  Shaun McCarthy, Brenton Slotegraaf, Clinton Slotegraaf, Tim Decker

1st           Darren Lapthorne
2nd          Shaun McCarthy
3rd           Brendan Schultz
                Tim Decker

Longer than usual race for a hard hit out before Friday’s crit. Lappers & Shaun bolted at the start to ensure the race wasn’t shortened. 30 minutes in, the bunch started to implode. Just when the chase was having an effect, they ran out of men.1st & 2nd saluted 250 metres in front of the rest.
The marshals were Peter Tepper, Petar Benjamin, Maurie Kennedy & John Lucas.

6/02/2011            EMU CK GRADED SCRATCH          28 RIDERS

A GRADE              10 RIDERS            52K
Tony Fitzpatrick, Ryan Pontelandolfo, Peter Ladd, Darren Lapthorne, Mark O’Brien, Tim Hucker, Brenton Slotegraaf, Luke Knox, Peter Casey, Sam Crome
1st           Darren Lapthorne            1:16:14
2nd          Tony Fitzpatrick
3rd           Tim Hucker
                Brenton Slotegraaf

A leisurely 1st lap, to inspect the damage from the storms the day before, was followed by a flat out 2nd lap. Casualties were high, with punctures the order of the day. Out of the exchange, Lappers had 500 metres. The chase was hot, but not an inch was surrendered, with a very convincing win.

B GRADE              14 RIDERS            52K

Josh Tepper, Jason Lowndes, Jordan Lucas, Andy Hayhow, Beth Duryea, David Bakes, David Mannix, Justin Leske, Steve Rooney, Syd Anstee, Andrew Creek, Adam Lennon, Anthony Lindsay,           Damien Vendy
1st           Josh Tepper
2nd          Jason Lowndes
3rd           Syd Anstee
4th           Dave Mannix

A very polite 1st lap, characteristically followed by a full lap sprint on the 2nd. All remaining riders hit the line very close at the finish. Another surprise win for Josh, who now has to try for the hat trick in “A” next week.

C GRADE              4 RIDERS              26K

Terry Medcalf, Madison Leske, Peter Tepper,  Greg Mundy
1st           Greg Mundy
2nd          Peter Tepper
3rd           Terry Medcalf

With the strong winds about, the  group stayed as close together as possible. The trip down the Gooseneck memorable for having a tail wind . Possibly the 2nd time in 20 years. The foxing at the end went almost to the wire , with Greg  just getting home.
Marshals were Steve McCallum, Terry Crome, Amanda Hales, John Lucas, Petar Benjamin &          Gary Pontelandolfo.

30/01/2011  MAYFAIR PARK CRITS  34 RIDERS B GRADE        18 RIDERS        20 MINUTES & 3 LAPS

Justin Leske, Dave Mannix, Tess Spencer-Gill, Adam Lennon, Dion Brownfield, Steve Rooney,        Greg Mundy, Kate Finegan, Phil Bone, Syd Anstee, Beth Duryea, Steve Flood, Terry Schintler,        Ryan Evans, James Thompson, Peter Tepper, Josh Tepper, Matt Leonard

1st           Josh Tepper
2nd          Justin Leske
3rd           Adam Lennon

The promise of an early exit from the heat provided a big field, with action on from the start. Kate was in most of the moves again, & looked the goods. With a lap to go it was Adam who surprised with an attack, but after last week no sneak runs were going unchecked. It was therefore a surprise to see Josh regain some form to take the win from Justin & the unfortunate Adam.

A GRADE              16 RIDERS            30 MINUTES & 3 LAPS

Darren Lapthorne, Sam O’Dea (missed B with a puncture ), Carl Harris, Tony Fitzpatrick, Tim Hucker, Tim Ralton, Sam Crome, Brendan Schultz, Shaun McCarthy, Josh Gundry, Mark Flood, Todd Schintler, Clinton Slotegraaf, Brenton Slotegraaf, Luke Knox, Kel Jones

1st           Tony Fitzpatrick
2nd          Brndan Schultz
3rd           Shaun McCarthy
               Tim Hucker

The strongest A grade for ages, with a high pace from the gun. Not the usual suspects in the attacks though, with Kel testing himself, either attacking or running down. The finish was a surprise result, almost needing a camera to split 1st-2nd, & 3rd from 4th.
Thanks to the marshals, Bill Fleming, Petar Benjamin & Terry Crome.

23/01/2011         MAYFAIR PARK CRITS     14 RIDERS            30 MINUTES & 3 LAPS

¾ lap                      Justin Leske, Kate Finegan, Josh Tepper, Sam Murphy, Andrew Creek, Greg Mundy, Ash Harding, Jo Wall

2 Laps                    Peter Tepper, Madison Leske
1st                        Ash Harding
2nd                       Kate Finegan
3rd                        Kel Jones
4th                        Ryan Pontelandolfo

A varied bunch of riders required a handicap format. Limit looked the goods early, with the 1st lap not caught  until 17 minutes in. As scratch had caught 2nd in 15 minutes, the gap wasn’t as big as it had appeared. At 5 to go, the race was together. As the riders started looking at each other at the start of the last lap, no-one looked at Ash, giving him no choice but to go. Although he’s done it many times before, this time it was “ in slow motion,” according to Ash. With Kate being frisky all race, the chaser was predictable, the result not. Ash just survived, at great physical cost, with Kate hot on his heels & the bunch just behind.
Marshals were Bill Fleming, Petar Benjamin & John Lucas.

With weather threatening, a good tail wind was a great start for the outer marks, all away fast. Jarrod had an early Xmas present with a lift to 2nd, & looked the goods in the best bunch on paper. That was pre-race though, with scratch priding themselves on always winning. Even though they started undermanned, & lost Sam with a puncture, they weren’t going to take prisoners. A flying 1st lap boded ill for the rest, & the limit riders surrendered their big lead at the exchange hill on the 2nd lap. Even so, most stayed on the leaders to the finish, where the result was only certain with a photo. The time was only 18 seconds off last years’ record, in spite of the small bunch & the strong wind.
Marshals were Andy Berry, Phil Peterson, Carl Phillips, Trevor Watchman, Bill Fleming, Petar Benjamin, Darren Casey, Tim Hucker,Kerry Benjamin, Gary Pontelandolfo Shaun McCarthy.

“A” had it in front of them, giving 2 laps start. They looked good until the halfway point when “B” stopped squabbling & rode more disciplined to go to a sprint finish. Steve bolted for his best result against quality sprinters.

With three punctures just prior & during the race, it was just like four years ago when every race seemed to be marred by punctures.

Marshals were Bill Fleming, Petar Benjamin, Bruce Tonkin & Alisa Rooney.

1/11/2010         SOMERSET PARK H/CAP                                34.8K     11 RIDERS

6 min                    Martin Banfield

1st                        Dave Pell             1:01:40

2nd                       Tim Hucker

3rd                        Jamie Crass

With such a lopsided field the outmarkers were always in for a hard day, but at least limit had a chance. No volunteers were forthcoming from the scratch bunch to help out Martin on his pat. Instead they claimed they’d “look after him” if he rode with them. So they would have. By the 2nd corner most likely. Martin was caught around halfway, with limit caught 2 laps to go. With such a quality bunch coming into the sprint it was perhaps not surprising that the sprint began 27 seconds from home. Learning from Hushovd at Geelong it would appear. Although Dave won by a length, he believed he was going to get rolled on the line, with the rest right on him. Tim scraped home from Jamie by the bare minimum of a tyre with another  of his perfect throws; just like the club champs. It was so close at the end that the most reliable of judges, Rob Crass, bolted so that he wouldn’t be called on if it was too close. Just when Jamie needed his father’s help.

Marshals were Matt Kirby, Petar Benjamin, Tony Knox, Peter Ladd & the world’s wisest judge, Rob Crass.
